HOW TO MAKE A WATERMELON GRILL

Grilling season is back which means it’s time to rally the troops for a summer series of backyard cookouts. With so much focus placed on the meat selection, grilling techniques and which beverages pair best, it’s easy to overlook the snacks and side dishes that keep the crew satisfied while waiting for the main course. Whether you’re hosting or attending, there’s one side dish that will bring smiles to the faces of everyone around you… the watermelon grill. It’s creative, festive and most importantly, delicious. And if you’re the chef, it’ll keep the crowd away from the real grill while you work your magic.

With a few minutes of free time and a few dollars to spare, you can take your cookout game to new heights. Here’s how to do it yourself!

Cut holes in the watermelon to make the legs for the grill. Make 3 holes slightly smaller than the size of your celery stalk in the bottom of the watermelon.

Step 2

Slice and hollow the watermelon. When hollowing out the watermelon, use a melon baller to create pieces for the skewers in later steps.

Step 3

Create the grill. Insert wooden skewers into the top edge of the larger watermelon bowl, pushing them through the other side until they’re flush with the rind.

Step 4

Add blackberries to create the “charcoal” because authenticity counts. To get them below the skewer grill you’ve just put in place, remove one skewer and pour your blackberries in. Don’t forget to put the skewer back in place once finished creating your charcoal.

It’s time for the legs! Bring your grill to life by inserting 3 celery stocks into the holes you cut at the bottom of the watermelon. If you need additional support, place a skewer through the celery stocks.

Step 7

Make the fruit kebabs. With your assortment of fruit, get creative and make your kebabs. When the kebabs are ready, throw ’em on the grill for the full grilling effect. Presentation points always count.
