So you can lift hella heavy barbells. That’s cool. But if you don’t brag about it to everyone you know, are you even allowed to do CrossFit?
Begun in 2000, CrossFit blends high-intensity training exercises with aerobics and olympic weightlifting. And the training program teaches both mental and physical strength, basically meeting you where you are to achieve whatever fitness goals you have.
So, chances are if you’re reading this, you’re probably a fan of CrossFit … or you’re at least curious. But have you ever taken part in CrossFit competition? Read on to learn about competitions, whether you’re ready to compete, and how to prep for them.
What are CrossFit competitions?
So basically, there are tons of CrossFit competitions. Most of these events involve plenty of movements—some easy, some hard—like box jumps, pull-ups, and everyone’s favorite, thrusters.
A great place to start is at your local box (if you’re a real CrossFitter, you know not to call that place you work out a “gym”). Then there are regional competitions where you compete against others from your region with the hopes of advancing even farther.
The CrossFit Open is one of the qualifying stages that gets you to the Olympics of CrossFit — the CrossFit Games, which are four days of super-intense competition with tons of reps and pretty strict time limits.
To actually qualify for the CrossFit Games, well, you gotta be on top of your game. Any open athlete has to compete in five workouts over a set period, and post their scores online, validating that they actually got the score they did via video proof or documentation from local judges.

How should I prepare for CrossFit competitions?
Understand that it takes even more intense work than normal. Perform a wide variety of moves with your coach so you’re prepared for whatever is thrown at you during competition days.
Have a rest period. The week before competition, scale back your intensity so your body is well-rested for game day. Let’s face it: Sore muscles suck.
Manage overall diet by meal prepping. This is the most important time to worry about how you’re fueling your body. Plan both your meals and snacks, making sure you’re getting the right amount of protein, carbs, and fats. Keep a stash of lean proteins like our turkey sticks in your gym bag for a post-workout snack. Adhering to a regimen filled with clean, healthy foods (and, of course, lots and lots … and lots … of water) means you’ll be well on your way to smashing those goals.
How do I know if I’m ready to compete?
So you want to compete … or maybe you’re still on the fence. Sure, you know any event makes for a high-stress and high-adrenaline environment. But even if you’re unsure … just go for it! Meet with your CrossFit coach to discuss your feelings and get encouragement. You got this!
