How To Stay Fit On The Fly

As every traveler knows, it’s easy for our fitness and nutrition goals to take the back seat while on the road, especially when holding down the old 9 to 5 in the process. Add to that the stress of avoiding traffic, catching a red-eye and managing all the journey’s logistics, it’s easy to see why maintaining a disciplined workout schedule can often times be too much to manage.

During a three-week adventure from Salt Lake City, Utah to Baja, Mexico and back, the mission was to stay focused to ensure my fitness didn’t take a vacation. The lack of crowds and cell phone service in Mexico made things a bit easier than anticipated. However, with sights set on San Diego during the next leg of the trip, challenges were becoming all more apparent: long waits at the border, tempting treats and snacks, and the allure of the infamous California burrito! But, one of the beautiful things about any trip to California is that you don’t have to look too far for fun and scenic ways to work up a sweat.

Running is a perfect way to get to know cities and increase circulation. From piers to parks, it’s always fun running in new surroundings.

Longboarding is a great way to get around cities if you don’t have a car. While racking up an Uber bill is easy on the muscles, it doesn’t offer the same thrill of floating through the city and soaking up new surroundings. Pro-Tip: Get to know someone with an extra-long board in California; tacos & beer work every time.

If you need a rush of adrenaline, acquire a penny board! These things fly!

A stroll on the beach is obvious but easy to take for granted. Try to make it a goal to meet some new people, especially locals. They can tell you about the coolest hikes with the best views, surf breaks, parks, climbing spots, etc. A simple hello can lead to a million awesome adventures.

Go for a surf! Many places rent surfboards if you don’t travel with one. Even if you can’t catch waves, paddling and fighting through breaks is not only refreshing, exhilarating, and often times humbling, but (you guessed it) a good way to get some physical activity.
